Last spring, William Wheeler was going door to door to buy used cell phones to resell.
For a couple of months last summer, he ran his fledgling phone business out of his garage. Then, in late September, he moved it to 41st Street.

BUSINESS BUZZ: Big blue house may be on the move PDF Print E-mail

The big blue apartment house that dominates the northeast corner of Eighth Street and Minnesota Avenue will be moved or demolished to make way for a new office building.


A nonprofit organization is studying the feasibility of relocating the house, which is vacant. If moving the house is too expensive or otherwise unworkable, the social services agency that used to own it will salvage the structure and then it will be razed, says real estate broker Craig Hagen.

Matthew Luke and Michael Winkleman want their new business home to have a special atmosphere.
"We’re hoping to make this a creative hot spot," Luke says.
Luke and Winkleman are the creative directors and co-owners of Complete Media, a marketing, advertising and media-production firm. Their business should be moved by Christmas into the tan-colored, brick building they are remodeling at 927 E. Eighth St.

Although he has been planning his retirement for six years, the end sneaked up quickly for Dan Scott.
He announced recently that he will retire Feb. 1 as the president of the Sioux Falls Development Foundation.
Scott and the foundation board worked out an employment plan in 2001 that was designed to keep him on the job until this year. The deal also enables him to retire at 62, which he turned about a month ago, Scott says.

BUSINESS BUZZ: Company saving 26 acres for right project PDF Print E-mail

An Aberdeen-based company says it has been getting inquiries about land it owns in northwestern Sioux Falls but is in no hurry to sell.
Swap LLC owns about 26 acres at the northwest corner of Kiwanis Avenue and 60th Street North, which is on the fringe of a developing area of the city. The property, which the company acquired last year on speculation, is near the Flying J truck plaza and the Redstone Village development area.
