Anyone remotely worried that Midcontinent Communications might move out of state can rest easy. Nearly 350 employees are settling into the company’s new operational headquarters in northwestern Sioux Falls.
“Sioux Falls has been our hub of activity for 75 years. It looks like we’re here to stay,” Minneapolis-based chairman Larry Bentson said jokingly during a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony at the company’s 52,000-square-foot facility.

BUSINESS BUZZ: Cherapa's roof planted with 'green' shingles PDF Print E-mail

ImageCherapa Place, the six-floor office complex rising from the ruins of the former Zip Feed tower, embraces the green concept.
As used in the world of building design, construction and operation, green refers to voluntary, environmentally friendly practices that lead to special certification.

Cherapa, for example, is using the busted-up concrete remains of the Zip tower as ground filler. The inside of the new building will include toilets that conserve water. And the best parking spots will be reserved for drivers with fuel-saving hybrid vehicles.

The availability of workers has been a major concern of growing businesses in Sioux Falls and across South Dakota for years. It might be their biggest concern.
"Labor issues have probably overtaken health-care issues as the No. 1 issue," says David Owen, president of the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

BUSINESS BUZZ: Clarke Cos. has buildings to sell before leaving PDF Print E-mail

Although Clarke Cos. recently sold two apartment complexes in Sioux Falls, the Des Moines-based company hasn’t entirely left the city.
Clarke still owns five commercial buildings in an office park south of The Empire Mall. Those buildings, which total 125,000 square feet, are on the market, too, however.
