Mike Miller donates $1 million to Sanford Children's Hospital PDF Print E-mail

Mitchell native and NBA player Mike Miller and his wife, Jennifer, are donating $1 million to Sanford Children's Hospital. The announcement was made May 23 at the hospital's groundbreaking ceremony.

The money will establish the Mike and Jennifer Endowment Fund, which will provide support for Sanford Children's Hospital. The children's hospital's pediatric intensive care unit will be named Mike and Jennifer Miller Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

"Everybody in South Dakota knows Mike as a basketball player," said Kelby Krabbenhoft, president and chief executive officer of Sanford Health. "Mike and Jen will long be remembered for their charity and philanthropy. Mike's basketball life is being used for much more than what people see. ... He and Jen are going to directly impact the lives of children and families."

In January 2004, T. Denny Sanford donated $16 million for the children's hospital and a drive for matching funds raised slightly more than that.

Moments before the groundbreaking ceremony, Sanford asked chief executive officers of First Premier Bank and Premier Bankcard, Dana Dykhouse and Miles Beacom, to step up their half-million dollar contributions to $1 million for the Sanford Children's Hospital.

"I told them, 'You got to step up to what Mike Miller's doing,' " Sanford said in an interview after the groundbreaking.

He said there was no resistance, and they were happy about the opportunity.

The $52 million hospital will be completed in 2009. The facility will provide inpatient, outpatient and clinic services for pediatric patients and their families. The new building will also serve as a home base for five pediatric clinics to be built in North American in the next 10 years.

Sanford said he hopes the children's hospital will become a nationwide and possibly a worldwide organization.

"Why children? Why are we doing this? We all have an opportunity to invest in our neighborhoods," Sanford said during the ceremony. "I don't know a better way than for children."

Montana commission opposes NorthWestern sale PDF Print E-mail

The Montana Public Service Commission will recommend that the proposed sale of NorthWestern Energy to Babcock & Brown Infrastructure Limited of Australia be denied because the sale is too risky.

The commission unanimously voted against the proposed $2.2 billion deal.

Commission chairman Greg Jergeson said by telephone Wednesday that the MPSC staff will begin drafting a final order against the sale and it likely will be presented for a vote in late June or early July.

NorthWestern then will have 10 days to make a motion for reconsideration. The company also will have the option to appeal in court.

Jergeson said the risk of higher rates for consumers was a primary concern. The MPSC decided the benefits of the sale would go to the companies while consumers would be saddled with potential liabilities.

NorthWestern Corp. expressed disappointment in the decision and announced that it will decide what action to take after the commission finalizes its position.

"We are obviously disappointed by this development," said Mike Hanson, NorthWestern's president and chief executive officer. "However, we will wait until the written order is issued before deciding on our next steps."

NorthWestern and BBI announced in April 2006 that they had reached an acquisition agreement.

Raven shareholders hear optimism at annual meeting PDF Print E-mail

Raven Industries Inc. posted record sales and profits in fiscal 2007, but the year fell short of expectations, Ronald Moquist, president and chief executive officer, told shareholders on May 22.
The company's 51st annual meeting of shareholders attracted about 75 people to the Ramkota Hotel.

Two of the company's four operating units did not meet goals for the year, Moquist said. Nevertheless, the Sioux Falls-based company reported record net sales of $217.5 million for fiscal  2007, which ended Jan. 31. That was up 6.4 percent from fiscal 2006.

Net income increased a relatively modest 4.9 percent in fiscal 2007, to $25.4 million.

Moquist expects fiscal 2008, which started in February, to be another record year. Earnings growth is not likely to approach the lofty level of 30 percent, as it has in some past years, but financial performance should exceed fiscal 2007, he said.

"We're not satisfied with last year, but we don't need to reinvent the company to be successful," he said.
