Turner County has been awarded a $55,000 state agribusiness grant from the South Dakota Transportation Commission.
The grant is intended to help improve a stretch of 462nd Avenue to provide better access to the Great Plains Ethanol Plant, Gov. Mike Rounds announced May 10. Asphalt will be added to one-third of a mile of rural road.
The grant is part of a state Agri-business Grant Program, which helps local governments with road needs for projects associated with agriculture-related businesses.
The transportation commission allocates $1 million a year in highway funds for the program. The state reimburses communities for the amount of the grant, which is designed to cover 60 percent of project costs.
The program is within the Governor’s Office of Economic Development as well as the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
For more information on the SDDOT Agri-business Grant Program, see www.sddot.com or call (605) 773-3574.

By Sioux Falls Business Journal
Thursday, 10 May 2007

U.S. Sen. John Thune will be the host for a wind energy round-table discussion at 1 p.m. Monday at the Sheraton Hotel in Sioux Falls.

Panelists are Brad Barton, director of commercialization, U.S. Department of Energy; Brian Parsons, wind applications project manager, National Renewable Energy Laboratory; Laura McCarten, co-executive director, CapX Transmission Initiative, Xcel Energy; Beth Soholt, director, Wind on the Wires; Lloyd Linke, Watertown operations manager, Western Area Power Administration.

Thune recently introduced the Wind Energy Development Act in the Senate, which would provide tax credits and economic incentives to encourage the construction and expansion of wind farms.

"South Dakota could and should be a national leader in producing electricity harnessed through our abundant wind supply, but until now, our state has lacked the necessary infrastructure to fully develop this industry," Thune said. "I look forward to hearing from the panelists Monday at this forum as I move forward to develop additional legislative initiatives to help South Dakota become a leader in wind energy production."

Last year was historic for LodgeNet Entertainment Corp.
The growing Sioux Falls-based company, which went public in 1993, recorded its first profitable year, with net income of $1.8 million.
Initial work also began in 2006 on two key acquisitions that were completed earlier this year: the purchases of StayOnline and On Command Corp.
The company’s broadband reach for entertainment and informational services has extended to more than 1.8 million guest rooms in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
About 30 LodgeNet executives and shareholders reviewed fiscal 2006 and opportunities for 2007 on Wednesday during the company’s annual meeting at its Sioux Falls headquarters. The company’s fiscal year is the same as the calendar year.
Health-care institutions are one of the newer service areas in which company executives see opportunity.
“We’re absolutely looking to driving that forward,” said Scott Petersen, chairman and chief executive officer.
“We’re looking forward to a very interesting 2007” and years thereafter, he said.
