A bipartisan group of senators including South Dakota Republican John Thune has sent a letter to Underwriter Laboratories chief executive officer Keith Williams requesting the approval of fuel pumps that can dispense higher blends of ethanol. The letter comes as a result of UL's decision last year to suspend its authorization of E85 dispensers over concerns about the potential corrosive effects that fuel mixture might have on fuel components. E85 contains 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline.

E10 is a widely used fuel blend, but some ethanol supporters have been pushing for pumps that would allow a user to pump blends of 20 percent or higher.

Thune said it’s critical for Underwriter Laboratories to provide necessary certification for fuel dispensers to deliver alternative fuels at local gas stations.
