(Photo courtesy of MediaOne) Jan. 25-26 fundraiser draws heavy corporate support The 19th annual MediaOne Funski is speeding by a milestone. “We go past $400,000 this year for funds raised,” said event founder Greg Blomberg of MediaOne Advertising/Marketing. “It should be the biggest and best ever. We’ve got about $30,000 raised before the event, then we pick up registrations,” Blomberg said. Every dollar goes to the Children’s Inn.
Blomberg expects a good crowd for the contests.
“With the weather the way it is, it really gives us a major boost,” he said. “We’ve added a 5k run this year, got some young guys, the young runners. That is going to add a new dimension to it. We’re experiencing growth in the kickball area. That was a hit last year.”
Year after year, Blomberg appreciates the business community’s support.
“Corporate sponsors have helped build the event,” he said.
Howalt-McDowell Insurance Inc., Sanford Health, Medical X-Ray Center, KSFY, Results Radio, Showplace Wood Products, Koch Hazard Architects, attorney Steve Sanford and Beckman Construction are among the regular supporters.
“This year, we’re thinking we’re going to get more snow carvers,” Blomberg said. “Brian Rotert of Koch Hazard is organizing it. He takes a huge personal interest. He has people coming from TSP, one of their competitors, and an engineering company.”
Online registration is available until noon Friday. People can register on the day of the events also, but online is preferred.
MediaOne Funski founder Greg Blomberg recalls some of the craziest moments of Funski. “A million different things, but probably the most interesting one that some people would remember is we started the cross-country race one year when it was 18 below zero. One of our media partners called the race off on the air. About 50 people skied the race anyway. Fortunatly there was no wind. We had a great race.” “The Great Bear has had many problems getting his torch lit.”
