Patterson offers tips for candidates, employers

The 2008 SD BIG Job Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. Mark Patterson, director of career services at the University of Sioux Falls, a sponsor of the job fair, offers tips

Tips for job seekers
• Bring copies of your professional résumé and dress professionally.
• Review interview questions you might be asked by employers.
• Go the BIG Job Fair Web site (www.get grads.com), and do research on companies you want to visit.
• Have a positive attitude. No one wants to hire people who are negative or who don’t  believe in themselves. Have confidence and project a can-do attitude.
• Have a good handshake and good eye contact when you introduce yourself.

Tips for employers
• Come to the fair expecting to meet some of the best-qualified employees in the nation.
• Remember, some of the candidates attending the fair still are trying to decide their future direction. You can be a big part of that process in terms of the questions you ask and how you direct them to other companies at the fair.
• Model professionalism to job candidates.
