About The Sioux Falls Business Journal

A note from our Editor, Yvonne Hawkins.

Every vibrant community knows its own story and tells that story truthfully. The Sioux Falls Business Journal debuts today as a voice telling the stories of this city’s diverse economy.

We’re an independent, biweekly newspaper telling the stories of what and who moves this city’s economy. And we speak to you – the business, governmental and political leaders of Sioux Falls.

Many of you holding the pages of this inaugural issue are central to this economy. Your spirit of economic enterprise permeates this landscape. To a large extent, the stories you read on our pages are your stories.

Our reporter, Rob Swenson, who has covered Sioux Falls business for many years, will cover those stories. From the legacy of meatpacking domination to today’s multilayered economic engine to the high-tech ventures percolating as we speak, there are plenty of stories you need to know in order to make sound business decisions.

Swenson’s Business Buzz column also will keep you informed of the interesting tidbits floating around in the streets.

We’ll give you calendar information to connect you with seminars and professional meetings. Our specialty columns on workplace and small-business issues will link you with experts to help you mature your businesses.

We’ll offer you snapshots of the city’s economic indicators in our Vital Signs graphic feature. Our Databank connects you with crucial information such as building permits, commercial lease agreements and planning commission minutes.

And our Profiles and Movers and Shakers features show you others just like you who move this economy.

We’re here to give you the information and stories you need to know about this business community. Still, that’s not enough.

The Sioux Falls Business Journal also helps open debate about what’s best for this city. To that end, our Forum page serves several functions.

Our editorials will consider whether what’s happening locally and nationally is good business for this community.

Undoubtedly, there will be disagreement between us and you – or among yourselves. Therefore, the Forum page, through its guest columns and letters to the editor, also provides an arena for reasoning minds to debate.

And there will be moments when – by design or miracle – this community’s decisions are perfect. From restoring Falls Park to luring diverse service industries, this community routinely gets it right. So, we’ll celebrate those milestones.

We hope you’ll pore through these pages of the Sioux Falls Business Journal. Take an upclose, hard look at what we’re doing, and tell us how we’re doing it.

If we’ve done our jobs well, you’ll see yourselves.
