Classes, lessons can help anyone explore their hidden talents

If you’d like to add a little something to your life experience, how about picking up a new skill? Here are a few ideas. This is just a sample of what’s available in the area, and everyone is encouraged to explore all options.

Cooking classes
Where: Hy-Vee Food Store, 3000 S. Minnesota Ave., 334-7231, and 49th Street and Louise Avenue beginning in August
Price range: $10-$15
Time commitment: 1 1/2 hours
Areas: Variety, including grilling, Italian, herbs and spices, organic, healthy eating, chocolate, etc.
Also available: A variety of classes such as easy entertaining, brunches, etc., at Leonardo’s Cafe, Washington Pavilion, 731-2384, organized by appointment now with regular classes scheduled in the spring. Canning and cake-decorating classes at Nyberg’s Ace Hardware at 12th Street and Kiwanis Avenue, 336-6507.

Art classes
Where: Eastbank Art Gallery & Studio through member Carol Wright, 977-2667 or 338-0455
Price: $50 per session
Time commitment: 1 1/2 hours
Areas: Pottery, watercolor and acrylic painting, drawing
Also available: Horse Barn Arts Center, Falls Park, 977-2002, has workshops, such as an acrylics workshop July 28-29 ($85) and oil painting workshops over several evenings.


Scuba diving classes
Where: Donovan’s Scuba Center, 3813 S. Western Ave., 338-6945
Price range: About $50 to $425 for continuing education and entry level scuba diving classes, plus cost of basic diving equipment, which costs $300-$650. Sky’s the limit on diving systems, which cost from $2,000 up.
Time commitment: From an afternoon for advanced classes to two weekends for entry level scuba
Areas: Entry level scuba diving, snorkeling, 20 continuing education classes such as underwater photography, night diving, advanced navigation techniques, spearfishing, etc.
Also available: LandShark Scuba & Snorkel Center, 5208 W. 12th St., 339-3483, also offers lessons.

 

Music lessons
Where: Case Music Studio, 127 W. First St., Tea, 498-1788
Price range: $80 a month
Time commitment: Half-hour every week or an hour every two weeks, plus practice time
Areas: Drum set, percussion, guitar, beginning fiddle
Also available: Other private instructors can be sought through local music stores
