(Inertia/for SFBJ) Sioux Falls will celebrate the 100th anniversary of one of its jewels – McKennan Park – with festivities Aug. 8-10.Perhaps most fitting is a mother and child tea party to be held in the Sunken Gardens of the park beginning at 9 a.m. Aug. 9. It is a tribute to the intentions of Helen McKennan to have the park used by mothers and their children as a place to enjoy fresh air and sunshine. Other highlights: • Living History Film Premiere, 8 p.m. Aug. 8 at the bandshell, memories from Sioux Falls citizens. • Historic Guided Walking Tour of the Park, 3 p.m. Aug. 8 and 6 p.m. Aug. 9, starting at the north parking lot shelter. • Historic District Neighborhood walking tour, 7 p.m. Aug. 8 starting at the north parking lot shelter. • Performances at the bandshell: Phil Baker, 11 a.m. Aug. 9; Mogen’s Heroes, 7 p.m. Aug. 9; and the Sioux Falls Municipal Band, 3 p.m. Aug. 10. • ZooMobile, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 9. • Dog Show at the bandshell, 3 p.m. Aug. 9. Registration at 2:15 p.m. • Avera McKennan Nurses Station, in the park at various times each day. • Ecumenical Sunday service at the bandshell, 9 a.m. Aug. 10, followed by a light breakfast. • Ice cream social at the new picnic shelter, 1:30 p.m. Aug. 10. • Dedication of the Centennial Tree by Mayor Dave Munson, 2:30 p.m. Aug. 10.
Friday, Aug. 8: - Pool Open, 1 p.m.-8 p.m. - Plein Aire Painters in the park, various times throughout the day. - Avera McKennan Nurses Station, various times throughout the day - Historic Guided Walking Tour of the Park, 3 p.m. starting at the north parking lot shelter (Larry Weires, longtime park employee and resident park historian, will provide attendees with a developmental tour of the park.) - Historic District Neighborhood walking tour, 7 p.m. starting at the north parking lot shelter (conducted by Siouxland Heritage Museums). A north and south version of the tour will run simultaneously. - Living History Film Premiere, 8 p.m. in the bandshell. (The living history film premiere is a compilation of memories from Sioux Falls citizens and produced by CityLink Cable Channel 16.)
