Egg production up 29 percent in 2006 |

The value of egg production in South Dakota during 2006 was $26.3 million, up 29 percent from $20.5 million in 2005, according to the South Dakota office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers received an average 36.5 cents per dozen, up from the previous year's 30.1 cents. Egg production in 2006 was estimated at 865 million, up 49 million, or 6 percent, from the previous year. Chicken deaths and other losses were down 40 percent from one year ago.
South Dakota producers raised 4.2 million turkeys in 2006, down 300,000 head from 2005. Yet, pounds produced totaled 157.5 million, up 14 percent from 137.7 million pounds in 2005.The value of that production was $61.4 million in 2006, up $10.5 million from 2005.
