Cash receipts from South Dakota cattle, hogs, and sheep in 2006 totaled $2.311 billion, up 3 percent from 2005, the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service has reported. Cattle accounted for 81 percent of the total, hogs for 18 percent and sheep for 1 percent. Cash receipts increased in 2006 for cattle and hogs, but decreased for sheep. Gross income from meat animals, which includes value of at-home consumption, totaled $2.328 billion, up 3 percent from 2005. South Dakota cash receipts from marketings of cattle and calves increased from $1.845 billion in 2005 to $1.876 billion in 2006. Even though average prices were lower in 2006, more cattle and calves were sold during the year, resulting in higher cash receipts. The annual average price for all hogs decreased from $50.90 in 2005 to $46.20 in 2006, while marketings increased from 3,417,500 head in 2005 to 3,881,500 head in 2006. Cash receipts from marketings of sheep and lambs in 2006 were $30.4 million, down 15 percent from $35.9 million in 2005. The annual average price for sheep decreased from $45.90 in 2005 to $29.40 in 2006, while lamb prices decreased from $130 in 2005 to $109 in 2006.
